Leadership AI and operating-model signals for AmLaw 200 firms

Note from Ted

Good morning and welcome to the November 2 2026 edition of the ASG Executive Brief. This week we look at leadership transitions across AmLaw firms the continuing debate over AI ownership in the C-suite and what those shifts mean for COO CFO and innovation searches. We hope the brief is useful as you plan leadership conversations inside your firm. Warm regards Ted French

Legal Market Pulse Several AmLaw firms continue to recalibrate executive roles around operations finance and technology. Leadership searches remain active where firms need operators who can scale shared services protect margin and modernize reporting. In many cases the mandate is less about adding another title and more about clarifying decision rights across the C-suite. Where searches are heating up COO and CFO searches remain especially competitive. Firms are looking for leaders who understand professional-services economics can partner with practice leadership and drive measurable operating improvement without disrupting culture. AI and Leadership Watch Firms are still deciding whether AI ownership sits with a dedicated Chief AI Officer or with an existing CIO CTO CKO or innovation leader. The better question is accountability governance and measurable adoption not the title alone. Boards and executive committees want a named owner clear escalation paths and evidence that approved tools are improving work quality and capacity. Talent Market Signals Non-attorney executives continue to gain influence in firm operating models across finance marketing technology and knowledge. Candidates are evaluating mandate quality influence team strength and whether leadership will support honest diagnosis before demanding rapid transformation. Quick hits COO and CFO mandates remain among the most competitive AmLaw searches. Knowledge and innovation leaders are being asked to partner more closely with AI governance. Several firms are quietly testing hybrid AI responsibilities inside existing technology portfolios. Compensation remains competitive for operators with clear P and L ownership and BigLaw or adjacent professional-services experience. ASG Perspective When firms rethink the C-suite the search process should start with decision rights outcomes and culture fit then move to candidate outreach. Define what success looks like in the first 100 days before interviewing. ASG can help map the role identify aligned executives and support a confidential process from first conversation through placement.
